Lady Aviators Garner Bergen County Bid

Heights baseball rises above .500

The Hasbrouck Heights softball team hosted a rare Bergen County Tournament playoff game last Saturday.

The Aviators garnered the 30th seed and hosted 35th-seeded Leonia on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

"I would rather gain the experience in the play-in game instead of going up against a third, fourth, fifth or sixth seed," said Hasbrouck Heights head coach Jackie Ferranti.

With a win on Saturday, Heights would play at third-seeded Paramus the following week in the first round.

Going into the game, the Aviators were 9-7 after taking care of Weehawken, 15-4, on Friday in the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Meadowlands B division contest.

Heights senior Julia Sheridan continued to have a strong game not only in the circle, but with her bat. Sheridan had a pair of doubles and smacked a home run. Overall the senior collected seven RBI  as Heights scored eight times in the first inning. Senior Daniella Castellanos added two RBI.

Earlier in the week Hasbrouck Heights defeated Harrison, 8-5, on Tuesday at home.

In the win over the Lady Blue Tide, the Aviators scored six times in the second inning including Carolyn Clites smacked a grand-slam home run. Sheridan also chipped in a triple to back her pitching in the circle where she scattered seven hits.

One of the best games this season might have been a loss that came on Monday with a 5-4 loss at Lyndhurst.

The Aviators took the lead in the top of the seventh inning with the help of a three-run Sheridan home run and a 4-3 Heights lead.

But the Golden Bears came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to get the win.

"They were definitely deflated after the game especially since we beat them (Lyndhurst) last year," said Ferranti. "I told them that they need to be proud of how well they played and Lyndhurst is a very good team."

Baseball

Hasbrouck Heights raised its record over .500 with a 6-1 victory over Weehawken at .

As it turned out, the Aviators scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Michael Matteis had a pair of RBI while Kevin O'Leary and Shawn Waldron added a RBI each.

Heights pitcher Ray Espinosa continued to have a big year with a victory on the mound against the Indians.

The win over Weehawken made it back-to-back victories after a 7-3 win at Harrison on Tuesday.

After the Blue Tide scored three runs to tie the game at three, the Aviators scored four times in the top of the sixth inning to grab the NJIC Meadowlands crossover game.

Gabe Toledo hit a home run while Joe Crabbe and Robert Klenk had a double each. Toledo along with Chris Abramo and Shawn Waldron chipped in two RBI each.

Heights played a good game against Lyndhurst, but came out on the losing end in a 2-1 game that went into extra innings. The Golden Bears scored a run in the top of the eighth inning, but the Aviators could not respond in the bottom half of the inning.

Crabbe was the hard-luck loser on the mound in the NJIC Meadowlands crossover game at Depken Field.

The Aviators scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at one after a Espinosa RBI in the bottom of the inning.

Boys Tennis

The Aviators tennis team raised its record to 13-2 on the season after it shutout Palisades Park, 5-0, on Tuesday and were second in the NJIC, behind only Leonia.

All of the three singles and two doubles teams won in straight sets. Heights first and second singles in juniors Chris Sciancalepore and Giovanni Lombardi only lost one and two games respectively in the two sets. Third singles Adam Patrovics won 6-2, 6-2 in the match against Palisades Park Justin Kim.

The doubles matches were highlighted by Heights first doubles team of Angle Rodriguez and Michael Schroback with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
