Sports Wrap: HH Boys Soccer Returns to County Tourney

Aviators football team wins third straight game

The Hasbrouck Heights boys soccer team's great start has landed the Aviators back in the Bergen County Tournament.

The Aviators will host a play-in game on Thursday at home against Leonia at 4 p.m. If Heights defeats Leonia, they will have a big hill to climb against second-seeded Ramsey on Sunday at River Dell High School at noon.

Heights was 6-2 on Monday after shutting out Secaucus, 4-0, that came on the Bergen County Tournament cutoff date. The lone two losses have come to Wallington, 3-2, and Harrison, 2-0, last week.

Hasbrouck Heights won its third game in a row on Friday night after its season opening loss to Saddle Brook. The Aviators are 3-1 heading into Friday night’s contest at Becton at 7 p.m.

In addition the Aviators avenged a loss to Wallington last season with a 41-7 victory at Depken Field in a North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Meadowlands Division B battle.

The Aviators took a 27-0 lead by halftime with the help of a pair of touchdowns from junior Anthony Seidel. Seidel ran for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to James Fitzsimmons to lead the way. Mike Pikowski also was part of a pair of touchdowns, a 13-yard run and a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Darren Iurato. Wallington quarterback Danny Pastor hit Tyler Soto on a 36-yard touchdown strike for the lone Panthers score.

Girls soccer

The Hasbrouck Heights girls team qualified for the Bergen County Tournament, but it was a quick exit. The 19th seeded Lady Aviators lost 2-0 at 14th-seeded Old Tappan on Sunday.  Heights goal keeper Julia Sheridan made 11 saves in the loss.

It was the first loss of the season for the Aviators who are 7-1 for the season.

On Wednesday, Heights rebounded from the county loss with a 4-0 victory over Queen of Peace in North Arlington. Maggie Filja kicked in two goals and added an assist while Angelika Barris and Jordyn Anderson added a goal each. Nicole Wrede had a pair of saves to collect the shut out in goal.

On Sept. 28 Heights overwhelmed North Arlington, 7-0 with a hat trick from Jodee Giarratana and two goals from Filja. Danielle Cannici chipped in a goal and three assists in the NJIC Meadowlands crossover victory. Wrede made a pair of saves to preserve the shutout.

Girls tennis

Hasbrouck Heights garnered an eighth seed in the Group 2 North 1 state tournament that starts on Thursday.

The Lady Aviators host ninth-seeded Lenape Valley on Thursday in the first round. A Heights win over the Patriots would send them into the second round against top-seeded Pascack Hills on Oct. 11 in Montvale.

Heights raised its record to 8-1 on the season with a 3-2 win at home against River Dell on Tuesday. The Lady Aviators received victories from first and second singles in Nina Messery and Jen Cheng along with first doubles tandem of Alexandra Orzel and Christine Le.

The tennis team also defeated Rutherford, 3-2, on Monday at home. Messery won at first singles along with first doubles team of Orzel and Le. The second doubles team of Meredith Stroud and Megan Sharkey gave the Lady Aviators the match victory.
