State Test Scores for 2011 Show Some Improvements

NJ Department of Education released scores for 2011 this week

A brief analysis of the state assessment test scores for the NJASK and HSPA, which were released by the state Department of Education on Wednesday, show some continued improvement over the previous year in most grades and subject matter.

Dr. Mark Porto, superintendent of schools, has continued to address parents and the school community on how the district is approaching these tests, stating that instructors are not teaching to the test but rather working to make sure the students are getting the skills they need which these tests measure.

School administrators have also set out to prepare the students for these tests. Porto stated during the most recent Board of Education meeting that teachers at both Euclid and Lincoln elementary schools put together NJASK simulated tests to help the students prepare for the 2012 testing

He gave a where he pointed out many facts which the scores below (see charts) show such as the high school continues to score the highest in math and language arts.

Porto had also explained that scores at the middle school levels showed enough improvement that the school has placed “on hold” as a failing school according to No Child Left Behind standards. He had explained that the scores will have to show improvement for two years in a row in order to no longer be considered a failing school. He also attributed improvement in math at the middle school which he attributed to the algebra based curriculum which was recently introduced at those grade levels.

A brief analysis of the scores below show some significant differences in scoring between the two elementary schools on the NJASK test which tests students on language arts and math. As the scores below show  the proficiency percentage at Euclid School is significantly higher than Lincoln School in the fourth grade level for language arts.

At the third grade level percentages of students scoring at the partially proficient and proficient level for language arts are quite similar between the two schools, but there is a higher percentage rate of students scoring at advanced proficiency at Euclid.  Differences also shown for grade three in math where the proficiency level at Euclid is significantly higher than Lincoln.

Grade 5 language arts scores show a drop in percentage of proficiency and advanced proficiency and an increase in partial proficiency.  In math grade 5 a higher percentage of students scored higher in proficiency and advanced proficiency levels.

The NJASK for grade 8 tests science in addition to math and language arts. The scores below show an increase in the percentage of students who scored at the profiency level, a drop in the advanced profiency level and an increase in the partial proficiency level.

See the charts below which show the percentages of students who scored Partially Profienct, Proficient and Above Profienct for the NJASK and HSPA. For NJASK grades 3 to 5 scores are listed for each elementary school, along with the average between both schools for 2011 and for 2010 to show a comparison. Scores for 2010 are also listed for the other grades to show a comparison with the 2010 scores.
