Petitions are now available at the Board office

Those interested in throwing their hat into the ring for the first-ever November school board election can get their campaign started now that petitions are available in the Board of Education office.

Dina Messery, business administrator, said June 5 at 4 p.m. is the deadline for filing the petition with the county Board of Elections. 

At the start of this year, Governor Chris Christie granted all districts the right to choose between April and November to hold its annual election. Heights joined many other Bergen County districts

As a result, the three current members of the board whose terms would have expired this month are serving out extended terms until the end of the year. Board President Josephine Ciocia previously told Patch she does not plan to run for re-election but added that it was possible she could still her change her mind.

Constance Doheney’s seat on the board is also up for re-election and Mark Stefanelli, who was , will have to seek re-election this year as well.

The public will not vote on the school budget this year. By moving election to November, the board also eliminated the need for a public vote on budgets with a tax levy that is within a set cap. Last week the board approved a budget that will increase the .
