Web Design Students' Works Showcased

Web design instructor Robert Iarossi presented web pages created by students during the Board of Education meeting.

Parents and members of the school community got to witness an up close account of what students are learning during the meeting Thursday as web design instructor Robert Iarossi presented a selection of web pages designed and created by several students in his Web Design class.

Iarossi explained that the students did all the work that goes into designing the web pages including the selection of the logos, color and design scheme as well as the research involved behind the focus of the page. He showed the audience an example of a webpage a student designed which is devoted to music. The site  ncluded information on all forms from country to rap music. Another student created a web page on pets.

Iarossi introduced Edward Frischkorn, a member of the junior class, to present the web page he created on the many different Google logos, or Google Doodle as they are called, which the famous search engine has featured over the years on its homepage for different holidays such as Thanksgiving or Independence Day as well as events such as the Burning Man event. He also showed one with a Lego theme. He said Google accepts submissions from people of their logo to feature on their homepage to correspond with these events.

Frischkorn went back over 13 years to find every Google Doodle ever created in order to feature each one on the web page he created. He said the website took a lot of time and the results of the page proved this true as he walked the audience through the information he put on this site which includes all the logos listed by the date they appeared, as well as separate page which has the history behind the Google Doodle.

He explained he had to insert the information and date for each image and also included hyperlinks to link out to information pages about the event the logo was based on. In total Frischkorn said there were 1,221 images he featured on this web site.

Iarossi said Frishkorn is “probably the hardest worker I’ve ever seen.” Dr. Porto suggested that perhaps he consider sending his page to Google as they may be interested in seeing what he created.

The Web Design class is one of many of the offered at the high school. Dr. Mark Porto, superintendent, explained that Web Design II will also be offered as of next year which Iarossi added will be a more advanced take on web design.

In addition the students have also been assisting the administration with the school website pages. Joseph Mastropietro, interim assistant principal said he often gets information from the students in the Web Design class that he uses to update the school’s website.  He credits student Patrick McGrath for showing him how to control the website for the middle and high school.

“Mr. Iarossi teaches the students and then they teach it back to me,” Mastropietro said.
