1 Bald Eagle Egg Hatches, Another Dies At Duke Farms In Hillsborough

The first of three bald eagle eggs laid in 2026 at Duke Farms hatched on Sunday morning.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Some good and sad news has come from the Bald Eagle nest at Duke Farms in Hillsborough.

On Sunday at 7:02 a.m., before the snowstor,m the first chick hatched, according to Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ.

This is the first of three eggs.

Tragically, on Friday, one of the eggs "prematurely cracked and is not viable. At 6:32pm the egg got stuck to the adult when she got off the eggs and fell outside of the nest bowl," according to Conserve Wildlife.

One remaining egg remains. Duke Farms and Conserve Wildlife are looking for a pip in the remaining egg.

The first egg arrived on Jan. 12 at 2:50 p.m. The second egg was laid on Jan. 15 at 12:42 p.m. And the third on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 3:31 p.m., during a snowstorm.

Duke Farms is located on 2,700 acres at 1112 Dukes Parkway W in Hillsborough.

"Duke Farms is a living lab where we develop model strategies for nature restoration, wildlife conservation, and clean energy transition," according to dukefarms.org.

The egg and the bald eagle parents can be seen on Duke Farms' Eagle cam, which livestreams the nest 24 hours a day, seven days a week at dukefarms.org/eaglecam.
