Long-Haul COVID Battle Causes Hillsborough Committeeman To Resign

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Newly-elected Hillsborough Committeeman Steven Cohen is resigning effective immediately due to his ongoing battle with long-haul COVID-19.

"This is a sad day for me. Unfortunately, as a result of work responsibilities and an ongoing battle with long-haul COVID symptoms, I’ve decided to resign my position from the Township Committee. I realize that my health has to be a top priority," said Cohen in his resignation letter.

Cohen, who ran under the Republic ticket with Mayor Shawn Lipani, was elected to the position during the November 2021 election.

He was sworn into office in January and has now resigned less than three months later.

Lipani announced the resignation news on Monday.

"We thank Mr. Cohen for his willingness to serve and wish him continued health," said Lipani.

This is the second time in just over a year that long-haul COVID symptoms caused a Township Committeeperson to resign. Last January, Olivia Holmes stepped down as well. Read More: Olivia Holmes Resigns From Hillsborough Committee, Has COVID-19

In accordance with vacancy law, the Republican Party can present the names of three people to the Township Committee as nominees to fill the vacancy within 15 days. Then the Township Committee has 30 days to make their selection and fill the vacancy.
