Hillsborough Local Expected To Be Named New School Superintendent

Michael Volpe previously served as the Director of Human Resources for the Hillsborough Township Public Schools.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — A former Hillsborough educator and township resident, Michael Volpe, is expected to be named as the new Superintendent.

The news was shared by Moorestown Board of Education President Mick Weeks in a letter to the community announcing Volpe is leaving the Moorestown School District and "will accept a position as superintendent in his hometown."

The letter didn't elaborate on Volpe's hometown but he and his family reside in Hillsborough. A request from Patch for information to Hillsborough Township Public Schools was not returned.

"The Board acknowledges the compelling opportunity presented to Mr. Volpe to work in his hometown and we wish him continued success," said Weeks.

Volpe had been serving as Superintendent at Moorestown School District since January. He previously served as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources at Princeton Public Schools before leaving at the end of December 2021.

Volpe also served as the Director of Human Resources for the Hillsborough Township Public Schools until February 2019.

The Hillsborough Board of Education's next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 14. It is unclear if Volpe will be appointed at this meeting.

A Superintendent search has been underway since the position become open in May when Acting Superintendent after Dr. Lisa Antunes resigned after being on a paid leave of absence for the past four months. Read More: Hillsborough Superintendent Resigns, School Finances Probe Continues

Antunes abruptly announced her leave of absence on Dec. 22, 2021. This was the same time the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office and the Hillsborough Police began investigating the school district's finances. The police investigation into the school's finances is ongoing.

Dr. Kim Felte had been serving as Acting Superintendent since Antunes' departure until Aug. 22 when Dr. Daniel Fishbein was hired by the Board at the Aug. 22 meeting with a salary of $227,500.
