The Hillsborough Township Committee voted in March to award a contract to Robert Wood Johnson Health Network to provide emergency medical services for the township, replacing the current provider, Hillsborough Emergency Medical Services Corporation (HEMs). The new contract went into effect as of June.

The Township did note that there remains an interest in having a volunteer EMS squad serve the Township in conjunction with Robert Wood Johnson Health Network.

However, they added that there is "no such interest for Hillsborough Rescue Squad to be that entity under its current leadership."

"Whether you wish to donate to the Hillsborough Rescue Squad is a personal decision to which the Township takes no position. The only purpose of this communication is to ensure there is no confusion regarding your decision on the status of emergency medical services within Hillsborough Township," according to the township statement.

The issue of replacing the Hillsborough Rescue Squad was much debated among residents and officials in town.
