Intense Audio, Video Released In Fatal Police Shooting In Hillsborough

Authorities released video footage of the fatal police shooting on Sept. 28, 2021 involving a Hillsborough man with a three-foot-long sword.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Video footage and audio from the fatal police shooting involving a man holding a three-foot sword on Sept. 28, 2021, in Hillsborough was released by the New Jersey Attorney General's office on Monday. (See video/audio below)

This was the shooting where five Hillsborough Township uniformed police officers police went to 43-year-old Patrick Chin's home on Piedmont Path at around 4:10 p.m. after getting a request to check on his welfare, according to authorities.

In the video, you can hear officers repeatedly yelling "Patrick drop it!"

Officers' voices can be heard screaming the words with more urgency and intensity as the situation continues.

"Patrick, listen to me. I understand you are going through some ... Patrick drop it! Patrick drop it! Patrick drop it!" yells an officer on the video.

"Patrick drop the knife now! Patrick get on the ground right now!" yells officers.

Officer George Kokinakous fired his service weapon killing Chin, according to authorities.

There were also four other officers of the Hillsborough Township Police Department who were at the scene at the time of the shooting have been identified as Officer Robert Feriello, Officer Thomas Gurba, Officer Kyle Edmonds, and Officer Dylan Ely. Feriello used pepper spray at Chin during the incident.

The video, however, does not show the actual encounter as it was recorded by the police car's mobile video recorder (MVR). The video does record the police car and officers arriving at the home and audio can be heard from the altercation inside.

"There is no body camera footage or other video footage that captures the actual shooting," according to the attorney general's office.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.

A second fatal police shooting was also reported earlier this month on Jan. 6. Joshua Mathis, 19, who lived on Corporal Langon Way was identified as the fatal victim.
