UPDATE: Intruder Arrested, In Critical Condition Following Home Invasion Of Off-Duty Officer's Manville Home

Breaking: The alleged Manville intruder is believed to be connected to multiple home and car burglaries in the area, authorities report.

MANVILLE, NJ — A Manville man, suspected of committing numerous home and car burglaries in the area, was arrested after he attempted to burglarize an off-duty officer's home early Monday morning, Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson announced.

At around 12:07 a.m. Monday, a 911 call reported a burglary in progress at a North Fifth Avenue home in Manville.

When Manville officers arrive they found a man inside, later identified as Tyreek Cook, 19, of North Second Avenue in Manville.

Cook was reportedly involved in a physical confrontation with the homeowner and suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest, Robertson said.

Officers and the homeowner began administering life-saving medical aid to Cook, who was then transported to a local trauma center for emergency treatment.

The homeowner, whom authorities have only identified as an off-duty police officer, was also transported to a local hospital for examination of injuries sustained during the physical encounter with Cook and traumatic stress-related physical conditions.

An investigation by detectives from the Manville Police Department, along with detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, and the Crime Scene Investigations and Forensics Unit has found that Cook is suspected of committing and attempting to commit numerous residential and vehicle burglaries in the area, Robertson said.

The investigation into Cook's alleged criminal activity is actively ongoing.

Cook has been charged with third-degree burglary and was listed in critical condition under police guard at the trauma center.
