2 Moms Open Hillsborough Chess Academy

Hillsborough and Belle Mead moms are celebrating the opening of the Hillsborough Chess Academy on Saturday.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough and Belle Mead locals are opening a chess academy in Hillsborough and celebrating with a ribbon cutting on Saturday.

Reena Parekh moved to Hillsborough eight years ago and found that there were no chess classes around for herself or her children.

“My kids are into chess, they have been playing it since they were little,” Parekh said. “I’ve always played chess myself but I never had a resource to learn chess and there were no classes in Hillsborough.”

Parekh found herself driving to neighboring towns for her daughters to be able to learn chess, which took a lot of time.

To offer a solution Parekh got together with Moushumi Sheth, who lives in Belle Mead, to startup their own chess academy. Sheth and Parekh's children both go to school together and both have an interest in chess.

The grand opening of the Hillsborough Chess Academy will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with Hillsborough Mayor Carl Suraci doing the ribbon cutting.

The academy will have instructors teaching an hourlong class for beginners and an hour and a half class for intermediate through advance. There will also be tournaments where students can compete.

The classes are open to ages 5 through adults.

Additionally, the academy will also offer yoga and mindfulness classes for both children and adults.

“I am hoping people can learn more about chess and have a place to be able to compete as well,” Parekh said.

The Hillsborough Chess Academy is located at 340 S. Branch Road, across from the Hillsborough YMCA. For more information call 908-292-8912 or visit hillsboroughchessacademy.com or Facebook.
