HOBOKEN, NJ — Would you pay $140 for a hoodie that says HOBOKEN from Urban Outfitters?

Well, if you were among the young folks who follow the "Y2K" fashion trend, you might.

Recently, the clothing company began selling a gray Russell Athletic "Vintage Y2K Hoboken College" sweatshirt with "Hoboken" written in red, as part of the Y2K Fashion trend.

The trend has been called "polarizing" by some.

Pop culture website Refinery 29 explains that's a nostalgic trend toward clothing from the late 1990s to early 2000s.

Remember how kids growing up in the 1970s were treated to movies and shows about the 1950s (Grease, Happy Days?) And the 1980s were filled with references to the '60s? It's something like that.

According to the website, "Low-rise jeans and tube tops wriggled their way onto TikTok last year. Heck, Y2K trends are now even embraced by millennials who already lived through these shudder-inducing styles during their actual teen years."

There's good news: "The clothes reviving these turn-of-century looks are better than ever and more wearable than they used to be. For instance, we're seeing low-rise jeans that actually cover the booty..."

Butt of course!

So then, why Hoboken?

Hoboken And Y2K

Urban Outfitters' PR folks didn't respond to inquiries by press time, but we can always take a look at what was going on in Hoboken in the first decade of the 2000s:

  • After a development stall in the early 1990s, new apartments were rising.
  • The light rail opened in 2004, and...
  • Young people saw Hoboken as a destination. Around 2010, basketball star Kris Humphries moved there, and brought fiance Kim Kardashian to Stacks Pancakes and ShopRite. The stars of "Real Housewives of New Jersey" moved here around then as well.

But there's actually no "Hoboken University." The city does have the Stevens Institute of Technology overlooking the Hudson River.
