15-Year-Old Boy Shot To Death In Jersey City: Prosecutor

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A 15-year-old Jersey City boy was found dead with a gunshot wound early on Monday morning, said police.

Tyshawn Smith of Jersey City was found by police near 124 Wilkinson Ave. on Monday, after receiving a 911 call around 4:20 a.m., according to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office.

Smith was pronounced dead at approximately 4:55 a.m., prosecutors said.

Prosecutors did not release further information, but said they are investigating.

"The circumstances regarding this incident are actively being investigated by the Hudson County
Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department," prosecutors said.

City Homicide Numbers

The death may bring the total homicides in the city for 2023 to 7.

The city had reported, on its website, six apparent homicides as of Sunday, which includes the recent domestic violence death of Norelis Mendoza. There was one possible homicide in Jersey City city limits in February that was not counted. Prosecutor's Office categorized the death of Luz Hernandez as in Kearny, as that's where the victim was found.
