3 Years Since Sandy: Hoboken Remembers And Moves Forward

Were you one of the Hoboken residents who shared your electricity during the 2012 storm? Thank you.

The damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012 left many tragic memories in its wake for Hoboken residents.

But it also left some inspiring ones, too.

On Thursday, on the 3rd anniversary of the “superstorm,” the City of Hoboken shared some photos taken in the aftermath of the storm via social media that show the handful of residents left with electricity sharing it with their fellow Hobokenites. [See above]

It’s a simple gesture that is still remembered years later, both in terms of community goodwill and political impetus.

“What we need — and indeed, what we’re working toward — is a plan to reduce the amount of flooding from storm surges, rising seas and stronger rains,” Mayor Dawn Zimmer wrote in a recent New York Times column. “We are building, and collaborating on, projects that will give flood waters a new path and make our city more resilient.”
