Foodie Fodder: After Controversy, Bagel Shop In Hudson County Is Replaced By New Eatery

Here's the hole truth on what's replacing City Bagel in a historic building in Hudson County.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Even bagel shops can be controversial in a top foodie town like Jersey City.

When a bagel shop opened in a home from the 1800s over the summer, people let it be known that they thought it was an odd fit for a historic structure.

One social media commenter said it was "heartbreaking," although others supported the business and wanted to give it a shot.

But last week, Jersey City's Historic Downtown Special Improvement District announced that a different kind of restaurant will move in.

"What was once a historic home — turned bagel shop — is now becoming a farm-to-table dining experience!" the SID posted. "We are looking forward to welcoming Bread Stone Cafe to Historic Downtown. 301 Grove St., Jersey City. ⁣Rumors say they'll be opening on December 10th. We haven't heard any exact dates yet, but we'll keep our eyes peeled! Jersey City has proven to be fond of this particular home. We are hopeful that our community will welcome the innovation with open arms."

As with many issues, the comments varied.

"They can turn a historic home into a bagel shop and now a restaurant but I can't even change my siding without someone's approval," noted one person.

"Didn’t even realize the weird bagel place was already closed," said another.

And also:

"Cool but can we get an actual proper bagel shop? Not wonder bagels. We need essa- or utopia-level bagels in JC."

"Wow, awesome! Historic spot definitely should = farm to table. I hope they lean towards local when possible! (And some veg+vegan delights!)"

"MUCH better idea for that historic structure."

"Did they actually check with the zoning department and historic department...?"
