HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken High School senior Alison Chavez is getting a full scholarship to Syracuse University in the fall, the school said.
She's been selected as a recipient of the Coronat Scholarship at Syracuse University, described as one of the college's most distinguished honors for incoming students.
Out of 18,000 students who apply to the University, only 200 are accepted as Coronat Scholars.
"The highly competitive Coronat Scholars Program," says the University, "offers a full-tuition scholarship to select students who apply to undergraduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences/Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs who demonstrate exceptional academics, leadership and service. It also elevates an already robust undergraduate experience at Arts and Sciences/Maxwell through tailored benefits and special opportunities."
Chavez ranks in the top 10 percent of her class and completed a rigorous academic program during her four years at Hoboken High, said the school. Her coursework included AP World History, AP U.S. History, AP Seminar, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP English Language, AP Precalculus and AP Research.
Chavez also pursued art and design and serves as the Social Media Coordinator and Art Instructor for Art for Unity, the district noted. She also creates movie reviews and infographics online, reaching more than 1,000 followers and accumulating more than 1.5 million views.
“Alison is one of the most dedicated, talented, and hardworking students I have encountered,” said Staci Gleason, Hoboken High School guidance counselor. “Her attention to detail, creative vision, and commitment to excellence truly set her apart.”
The district also highlighted Chavez's leadership and service record. She's co-captain of the Biolympiad team, has completed more than 200 hours of community service at a homeless shelter, thrift store, and as a summer camp counselor.
She's active in the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, class council and the track team.
Syracuse accepts fewer than half of its applicants.
