HOBOKEN, NJ — Enrollment in Hoboken's six public schools is on the rise after a decline decades ago, school officials say. The public schools will reopen to students on Tuesday.

At a "community engagement meeting" in July, Schools Superintendent Dr. Christine Johnson shared enrollment statistics showing that 3,746 students were enrolled in the district this past year. She said this is an increase of nearly 50 percent over the 2,500 students in the 2015-2016 school year.

Johnson told Patch on Friday that the incoming Prek-K through high school enrollment is 3,983. The number could change in the coming weeks.

The high school enrollment will be 779, with 201 first-year students in the incoming class, she said.

The numbers do not include Hoboken's three charter schools, which are considered separate districts.

"Growth has occurred across every grade level and is now progressing into our middle and high schools," the district noted. A study identified more than 3,100 approved housing units currently under construction or approved for development in town, which could add to future enrollment.

Changes And Important Dates

This year, students across the state will have to adjust to a new state law prohibiting them from having their phones in class.

Hoboken's school calendar was revised in April.

The first day off will be Sept. 21, a Friday, for the Jewish day of atonement, Yom Kippur.

Another important holiday, Rosh Hashana, begins at sundown on Sept. 11, a Friday, so students will not have off that day.

Students will be off on Nov. 5 and 6 for the annual teachers' union convention, and have a half day on Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving.

The school calendar for 2026-2027 is here. However, always check the district website, as it's subject to change.
