The Hoboken Charter School planned to open its new location on Washington Street with a celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, Sept. 13, nearly a week after most other schools in town started the year. But now, due to impending inspections, the school's students in kindergarten through eighth grade will start on Thursday, Sept. 16. High school students will not be affected, as those classes have remained at the school's other location in the A.J. Demarest Alternative High School building, near the intersection of Fourth Street and Garden Street.
School Board President Helen Cunning sent this letter dated Sept. 9 to parents and staff:

Dear Parents, Guardians, Teachers, and Staff,
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have been forced to postpone the opening of The Hoboken Charter School K-8 from Monday, September 13 to Thursday, September 16. Please note that on the HCS K-8 calendar September 16 is a 1:00 p.m. dismissal day for staff professional development.

Until yesterday, we were confident that we would be able to open on time, however we have been instructed that we have now an additional electrical inspection (for data lines) scheduled for this Friday, September 10 and the subsequent final fire inspection for either Monday or Tuesday of next week. Once these two inspections are complete, we will be issued a certificate of occupancy (CO) and the movers will be able to bring our belongings to the new site.
Understanding that this delay will make things difficult for some in our community, I apologize for the inconvenience.
At our next scheduled Board meeting, on September 15, the Board will discuss how to best make-up this time by either extending the school year or using the scheduled vacation days in November.
I wish I had better news, but at this point, it's out of our hands. Thank you for your patience and continued support. We look forward to an exciting new school year in our new home at 713 Washington Street.
Helen A. Cunning
President
Board of Hoboken Charter School
