Cannabis Shop Becomes Comedy Club, And Hoboken Shuts It Down

Now there's less smoking and no joking in Hoboken.

HOBOKEN, NJ — After Ho-Ho-Kus based comedian Charles Pearson opened a comedy club in a former Hoboken CBD store last month, he scheduled several shows in April.

But instead, the door is now adorned with a very un-funny orange sign.

It bears the words "Order to Vacate."

The sign says that the slim storefront at 109 Fourteenth St. — near the northern entrance to the city — was ordered shut on April 15 because "Premises are being used for comedy club without prior approval and Certificate of Occupancy."

Last month, Pearson told Patch that he used to perform comedy at the slim shop when it was the Green Room, a cannabis product store. This uptown location of the Green Room shut earlier in the year, although the downtown location near the Hoboken Train Terminal remains open.

Pearson filled the uptown spot with chairs, a microphone, and a small stage, and placed a neon sign in the window.

"It's a comedy club started by a comedian, for comedians," Pearson told Patch last month. "We are going to have the biggest shows in America, because we're giving back to the comedians." He stressed that he'd pay the performers and award $500 to the best routine of the night.

Patch reached out to Pearson this week for comment, and has not heard back. This story will be updated if he responds.

But apparently, the shows will go on.
