Cars Won’t Stop For Kids, Stroller At Hoboken Crosswalk (VIDEO)

"I had to get into the crosswalk to stop the traffic, otherwise she would've been waiting all day," a passerby wrote.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken police will soon be putting the spotlight on “failure to stop” driving offenses – the “number one violation seen in the city” – partly due to a social media video that shows several cars refusing to stop for an adult and three children at a local crosswalk.

In the video, which was posted to Twitter on Wednesday, five cars “ignore” an adult woman and three children – one in a stroller – who are trying to cross the street at 9th and Bloomfield in Hoboken, the videographer wrote.

“I had to get into the crosswalk to stop the traffic, otherwise she would've been waiting all day,” Peter Kim wrote, retweeting the video to the Hoboken Police Department and Chief Ken Ferrante.

Ferrante responded with a message of his own: it’s actually pretty common in Hoboken. According to the chief:

“This topic was discussed in my @HobokenPD command staff meeting that just ended. As per our municipal prosecutors, the #1 violation seen in @CityofHoboken Municipal Court is Failure To Stop. We are going to start publicizing some enforcement operations (before and after).”

The video got several comments from like-minded residents and pedestrians:

  • “Sadly, the mom then ran across the street, like they don't want to either a) hold up the people driving, b) get hit. Sigh.”
  • “Thank you for doing that. Absolutely ridiculous that cars do not stop and yield for pedestrians!”
  • “Thanks for posting this. Bloomfield is a thoroughfare... it’s like Washington but faster because no lights. Wish all the intersections on it had stop signs... we live on one without and they fly through at night.”
  • “Happens everywhere in Hoboken.”
