As an unintended consequence of COVID-19 and the social distancing guidelines that have helped to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, blood collections have been severely impacted. In 2019 New Jersey high schools and colleges accounted for over 18%, or approximately 37,000 units, of total blood collections in the state. From January through March 2020, 9,465 units were collected through high school and college blood drives prior to the shutdown, a loss of approximately 23% as compared to the same period in 2019. From April through June 2020, only 437 units were collected at high school and college drives as compared to over 10,000 units for the same period in 2019. The loss for the 2020-2021 school year from September through December 2020 is projected at over 16,000 units.
