Hoboken COVID-19 Numbers: 9 Patients Hospitalized, 8 Are Unvaccinated
Hoboken released new COVID-19 statistics showing 9 patients are battling coronavirus in the city's hospital.
HOBOKEN, NJ — The city of Hoboken released this week's COVID-19 case numbers and trends, showing that local hospitalizations are up, particularly among unvaccinated patients. The city also provided links to where to get tested or vaccinated.
As of Friday, Sept. 10, nine people were hospitalized at Hoboken University Medical Center with COVID-19, two of whom are Hoboken residents, the city said. One of the hospitalized patients is vaccinated and the other eight are unvaccinated.
Statewide, this past Friday, 1,167 people in New Jersey were battling COVID in hospitals. Of those, 128 are on ventilators. The Friday before that, on Sept. 3, 1,054 people in New Jersey were being treated in hospitals for COVID, 109 on ventilators.

Here are prior weeks' numbers:
- Friday, Aug. 27, 1,022 people in New Jersey were hospitalized with COVID, 98 on ventilators.
- Friday, Aug. 20: 923 hospitalized, 73 on ventilators.
Mayor Ravi Bhalla said Tuesday that the federal COVID-19 relief awards are coming for 179 local businesses. Of the 179 Hoboken businesses that will be awarded grant funding through the city, 115 will also receive a $1,500 vaccine bonus as 75 percent of their employees are fully vaccinated.

New Cases In Hoboken
According to the city, the Hoboken Health Department confirmed 56 new cases of the virus from Sept. 4-10.
Those numbers show a slight decline after rising over the summer amid the highly transmissible Delta variant. Here are numbers from past weeks:
- Aug. 21-27: 90
- Aug. 9-16: 71 (7 days rather than 6)
- Back in June, there were only 1 to 8 new cases each week in total.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been a total of 5,616 known, confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 56 fatalities in Hoboken.
Below is the breakdown of recent positive COVID-19 cases by age group since the last update:
- 0-11: 9
- 12-19: 1
- 20-29: 16
- 30-39: 19
- 40-49: 6
- 50-59: 0
- 60-69: 2
- 76+: 0
Vaccine Information
"The vaccine continues to prevent the majority of COVID-related hospitalizations and deaths," said Mayor Ravi Bhalla in a message from the city. "According to the state, of the 5.3 million New Jersey residents who are fully vaccinated, 0.35 percent tested positive for COVID-19, 0.007 percent of fully vaccinated individuals were hospitalized for COVID-19, and 0.002 percent of fully vaccinated individuals died due to COVID-19 complications."
While vaccinated people can still get the virus, they are less likely to be hospitalized or die from it medical professionals say. New Jersey is among the 15 states with the lowest death rates in the country from the virus.
Hoboken vaccination rates:
- All ages: 72 percent (first dose)
- 18 and over: 80 percent (first dose)
- 30 and over: 89 percent (first dose)
- 65 and over: nearly 100 percent (first dose)
- All ages: 65 percent (second dose)
- 18 and over: 73 percent (second dose)
- 30 and over: 82 percent (second dose)
- 65 and over: 97 percent (second dose)
'Vaccine Bonuses' For Hoboken Businesses
The city said on Tuesday that it will award federal COVID relief funds to 197 businesses in town, and give a $1,500 "vaccine bonus" to 114 of them who have at least 75 percent of their staff vaccianted. READ MORE: Businesses To Get $1,500 COVID 'Vaccine Bonus' In Hoboken
The Mu Variant
The city said in its update, "In New Jersey, the Delta variant continues to be the dominant variant, although a very small portion of COVID-19 positive cases have been tied to the Mu variant. As of last week, the State has identified 16 cases caused by the Mu variant, while the Delta variant makes up about 98 percent of variants in New Jersey. The CDC has not yet classified Mu as either a variant of concern or a variant of interest, but the CDC and the NJ Department of Health are continuing to monitor, evaluate, and collect data on this variant."

U.S. COVID Statistics This Week
More than 654,409 Americans died from COVID as of last Friday, up from 643,000 people the previous Friday.
Medical professionals say the COVID-19 vaccine is 95 percent effective against the virus, and while vaccinated people may have "breakthrough cases" — particularly among Delta — there is a lower chance of hospitalization or death for those vaccinated.

'High' COVID Activity
This week, the Central East region including Hudson County and three other counties still showed still showed "high" COVID activity, according to New Jersey's latest weekly report.
The determination is based on metrics such as case rate and positivity rate. And it may be used in determining school districts' protocols and other health measures.
