We are two for two! Under the tutelage of advisor Sharon Malenda, Hoboken’s Student Literary Magazine “CREATE” received its second national rank of “Excellent” from the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English). Three hundred and seventy-three schools nationwide entered this prestigious competition and Hoboken High’s magazine faired very well with only twenty-six schools earning the highest ranking. We did even better in New Jersey, where only fifteen schools ranked higher with a “Superior” award. Hoboken’s magazine “CREATE” showcases the immense talent that our small school holds.
From the NCTE: “NCTE’s Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines (PRESLM) recognizes students, teachers, and schools for producing excellent literary magazines. The program’s mission is to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines, seeking excellence in writing and school-wide participation in production. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this program on the NASSP List of Student Contests and Activities for 2012-2013.”
We look forward to our continued success of finding the hidden writers, extracting the vast potential, and molding the authors of the future. The featured writing in “CREATE” was produced by the members of Ms. Malenda’s Literary Magazine Club and her creative writing class and the art was collected from Mrs. Ising’s and Ms. Kubach’s art students and art club members. If you would like to purchase a copy of this awarding winning magazine, please contact Ms. Malenda at Smalenda@hoboken.k12.nj.us. The cost is $5.00 and the money will be used to ensure that we can produce another magazine this year. Supply is limited! Support the arts!
