A veteran police officer in New Jersey attempted to commit suicide and is clinging to his life in the hospital, a report says.
Police found Sgt. Alex Vasquez, 32, a decorated officer with the North Bergen Police Department, in his parked car with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Hudson TV reported Thursday.

Vasquez – a 12-year veteran of the force who helped to apprehend a suspect in the 2013 Millburn “nanny cam” home invasion case - is still alive, though fighting for his life, the report states.

Mayor Nicholas Sacco said that Vasquez is a former district champion wrestler at North Bergen High School and is “regarded by his peers as a leader and good friend to many in the department.”
