The NWS said that wind gusts on Friday may reach 48 miles per hour.

While forecasters don't expect nearly as much rain to fall as during the fatal Tropical Depression Ida in September 2021 (when more than 7 inches fell in some places), the amount expected to fall overnight into Friday is higher than in recent storms. High tide in Hudson County is supposed to reach 5.5 feet during the storm at 7:58 a.m. on Friday.

The City's Message

The city of Hoboken said:

"The National Weather Service is predicting heavy rainfall during periods between Thursday and Friday afternoon. Rainfall totals of up to 3 inches are possible for areas within the tri-state region, as well as wind gusts of up to 55 miles per hour. Areas of black ice may develop as temperatures decline on Friday.

"The Office of Emergency Management encourages residents to exercise caution as any intense rainfall of greater than 0.8 inch per hour could result in flooding in low-lying areas."

Here is the list of flood-prone intersections.

Cars will not be towed, but barricades may be posted.

"Residents are encouraged to move their cars from flood-prone areas. Due to the predicted storm, a special rate of $5 per 24-hour period is being offered in Garages B (28 2nd Street), D (215 Hudson Street) and MidtownGarage (371 4th Street) to residents with a valid Resident On-Street Parking Permit or Temporary Parking Permit, beginning at 12 pm on Thursday, and ending at 3 pm on Friday. Seniors and persons with disabilities will be provided the discounted rate for an additional two hours, from 10 am to 12 pm on Thursday, at the Midtown Garage, with identification required.

"Any resident utilizing the discounted garage parking will be charged $5 per 24 hour period between the designated hours, and a regular rate beyond those hours at all other times.

"In addition, Hoboken residents with disabilities who have either a handicapped license plate or hang tag for their permitted vehicle may also park in the Midtown Garage (371 4th Street) for the same reduced rate.

"Garage space is available on a first-come, first-served basis."

'Will Result In Numerous Road Closures'

The NWS said the coastal flood watch applies to 6-11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 23.

"There is potential for widespread minor to moderate flooding of vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline," the NWS said, "with up to 2 feet of inundation above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. This will result in numerous road closures and cause widespread flooding of low lying property."

The coastal flood watch applies to Hudson, eastern Essex, and eastern Union counties.

"Vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely become flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays," said the NWS.
