Dom's Bakery In Hoboken Reopened As Otok; Will Keep Traditions, Offer Pizza. Peek Inside.
A bakery that sold bread to Frank Sinatra in Hoboken closed in January. But a new owner is giving it new life while respecting tradition.
HOBOKEN, NJ — After Hoboken bakery Dom's closed in January — followed by the death of owner Dom Castellitto in April — people mourned the loss of the family patriarch and their favorite bakery. But a local restaurant owner reopened the shop on Tuesday with a plan to keep Dom's traditions, use the same bakers, and offer new items like pizza.
The bakery at 506 Grand St. is now called Otok Bakery.
On Wednesday morning, Maren Schmitt, whose family owns Schmitty's Bar on First Street, was telling customers who wandered in about the history of Dom's, and the fact that they will keep the 120-year-old oven in back.

"He used to sell bread to Frank Sinatra," Schmitt was telling a resident of the neighborhood who said he'd lived in the area for years but had never stopped in.
Behind the counter sat loaves of French bread and rolls, as well as menus offering coffee and baked goods, and signs of the past.

"It's been there for 120 years," she said, of the oven in the back of the store. "It's not going anywhere."
Schmitt said that she had rehired Dom's bakers, who had each worked with the store for 20 to 30 years. The bakery was founded by Castellitto and his wife in 1979 on the west side of Hoboken.
While respecting the traditions of the past, Schmitt said they plan to offer some new items: Cinnamon buns on Sundays, breakfast sandwiches, and eventually, pizza at dinnertime.
The bakery opened on Tuesday, and by Wednesday, the coffee machine was broken, Schmitt noted. But she planned to get it fixed soon and offer coffee daily.
