East Meets West at New Restaurant Matt & Meera
The eatery featuring local favorites with global flavors is now open at 618 Washington Street.
If you visit new restaurant Matt & Meera, don't be scared by the exotic spices, embrace them for what the chef calls a big flavor punch.
The restaurant, which opened this week at 618 Washington Street, is a collaboration between entrepreneur Praful Nikam and chef Hari Nayak, who has published five books about cooking and has been featured in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
Nikam and Nayak picked the name to merge the restaurant's western and eastern themes. “We wanted to bring something different to Hoboken,” Nayak said. “These are local favorites prepared with global flavors.”

One of the restaurant's signature foods is its naan-cho bar, which gives a new take on western style nachos by adding South Asian naan flatbread. “Everyone loves nachos,” Nayak said. “We're adding our own inspiration with new toppings and chutneys.”
Matt & Meera also uses naan bread for its thin crust pizza, which is topped with butter chicken and red chili. Other east-west blends include spiced lamb sliders served with handmade masala chips and homemade ketchup, plus more sandwiches, salads and shakes.

The restaurant, with a counter for ordering, has several smaller tables along the walls and a larger wood table in the center with room for ten or more diners. There are also tables in the front outside.
Nayak said the restaurant is arranged to give a communal feel to the dining experience.
“These dishes are meant to be shared, so you can bring your friends and family and mix and match,” Nayak said.
The restaurant will be open seven days a week beginning at 11am, and will close Mondays at 9:30pm, Tuesdays through Thursdays at 10pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 11pm, and Sundays at 9m. For more information see the attached PDF menu, and visit the Matt & Meera website.
