Female Graduates At Hoboken College Are Beating 'Gender Wage Gap'

Stevens Institute of Technology is one of just three "top" colleges in the U.S. where female graduates earn more than men, Forbes says.

HOBOKEN, NJ — At a time when many experts say that a gender pay gap is stagnating – and even widening in some places – Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken is bucking the trend, recently placing #2 in a Forbes study for “smallest gender gap in earnings amongst its graduates.”

In fact, women are now out-earning men by 1.6 percent once they graduate Stevens Institute, Forbes reported.

Among 117 top universities nationwide, Stevens was one of only three where females made more than males upon graduation, according to the study. The other two colleges to buck the trend were Clark University and Yale University. (Read the full study and see its methodology here)

The study used Department of Education data from the College Scorecard project to analyze median pay by gender for people who had started school six years prior, and who were now working and no longer full time in school.

“Even upon graduation at top schools, there is a resounding gender gap,” Forbes reported. “The average male in our study is earning $59K, while the average female is earning 19% less with a salary of $48K.”

Here’s what Stevens alumni were earning:

  • Male - $63,000
  • Female - $64,000

Stevens administrators had high praise for the study’s findings.

“At a time when the gender gap in pay continues to persist, Stevens’ graduates are bucking the trend,” said Susan Metz, executive director for diversity and inclusion. “This is another indicator that Stevens is getting it right.”
