Flood Warning System Meeting Planned For Hoboken As Tropical Storm Nicole Nears

HOBOKEN, NJ — The city of Hoboken has scheduled a meeting Wednesday to lay out its planned Automated Flood Warning System — a particularly relevant topic this week as forecasters say Tropical Storm Nicole could hit the city Friday night into Saturday.

Residents can register below for the Nov. 9 virtual community meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The barricades will not be in place any time soon, but the city wants to discuss the plans with residents before they are.

This winter, the city will install automated flood barricades and associated warning signage at some of the city's most flood-prone intersections in western Hoboken. The new barricades are intended to protect the community and deter unsafe travel during severe storm events by closing flooded roadways.

In recent years, Hoboken drivers have had to be rescued from their cars in flash floods. Elsewhere, drivers and their families have drowned in their cars during flash floods. See below for links to register.

Tropical Storm Nicole Information

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts that Tropical Storm Nicole will bring heavy rain to the Hoboken area Friday night into Saturday.

The National Weather Service predicts that rain will start Thursday afternoon, but the heaviest rain will hit on Friday night into Saturday.

High tide in Hoboken this weekend will be at 10:47 p.m. Friday night and 10:41 a.m. Saturday.

The NWS says:

Friday Night: Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. Low around 59. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent.

Saturday: Rain, mainly before 7 a.m. High near 65. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.
