RIDGEWOOD, NJ — With extreme weather events becoming more frequent across the country — including, most recently, rare warnings of hurricane-force winds and floods in California this week — some homeowners may need help recovering, and preparing for the future.

Ridgewood and other Bergen County towns had to deal with flooding in two separate events in the last two months.

On Monday, Ridgewood announced that it had opened up an online portal for residents to submit photos of flooding that impacted their homes. The information may be shared with the town, state, and federal government, they said.

"Our purpose is to create a historical database of residential flooding in Ridgewood to help create a long-term flood mitigation plan and assist our first responders and engineering staff," the town noted. Find out more here.

Meanwhile, the town also made residents aware recently of a state "Blue Acres" program to buy flood-damaged homes so homeowners can move on.

"Blue Acres offers Fair Market Value and evaluates participants for supplemental assistance or incentives, which are monies available in addition to the value of the home, to help ensure that offer amounts allow homeowners to pay off existing debt on the home (mortgage, liens, etc.) and have some proceeds from the sale to secure comparable replacement housing that is safe and outside of flood-prone areas."

A message from the village said that after Hurricane Ida, which caused fatalities and damage in September of 2021, "Blue Acres requested or received federal funding for nearly 200 homes across the State."
