National Ice Cream Day: A Nut Free Place In Hoboken To Get Some

A nut free coffee shop in Hoboken now serves ice cream that's safe for people with nut, egg, and sesame allergies.

HOBOKEN, NJ — This Sunday is National Ice Cream Day, but for people with nut, egg, or sesame allergies, a simple act like heading to the local parlor can be terrifying, since products that don't list those ingredients could have cross-contamination.

But a nut-free coffee shop that opened in Hoboken in 2019 has solved the problem just in time to get those mid-summer licks in.

The shop now serves ice cream products made by a New York company that avoids using nuts, eggs, and sesame in its manufacturing facility.

As of Monday, Joey No Nuts on Willow Avenue in Hoboken — a corner coffee and pastry shop with a walk-up window — offers 3-ounce cups and ice cream bars from the A La Mode Shoppe company, which uses a nut-free manufacturing facility in the Bronx and runs a parlor on the Upper East Side.

The 3-ounce cups come with their own little spoons, and the shop also sells vanilla ice cream bars with chocolate coating.

Customers head to Joey No Nuts' window at Willow Avenue and Seventh Street to order.
"The ice cream is rich, creamy, and flavorful," said co-owner Jess Dyer on Thursday. "It’s a wonderful and safe option for those with nut, egg, and sesame allergies, especially since they are single serving options."

For now, Joey No Nuts sells the vanilla, chocolate, pink sprinkle, partly cloudy (cotton candy), and wired (coffee chocolate chip) flavors, plus the ice cream bars.

A La Mode notes on its website, "With nut and other food allergies of increasing concern, it’s good to know that a la mode ice cream is made in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility where there is absolutely no chance of our products being compromised by any nut dust (or trace amounts of eggs, or sesame seeds)."

Dyer said, "We are working on making nut-free milkshakes as well including vanilla, chocolate, matcha and chai flavors. Depending on how well the ice cream sells, we are also planning to introduce ice cream pints with dairy and dairy-free options with flavors such as Oat Latte, Apple Pie, and Rose."

Meanwhile, the shop still offers coffee, other beverages, baked goods and a few food items with no chance of nut contamination.

The shop is especially popular with folks who walk up to the window, so they can get their coffee without dragging a dog or stroller inside.

Joey No Nuts is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week, and the ice cream is available for purchase during all of those hours.
