Hoboken Under Flash Flood Watch Through Early Sunday Morning

"With recent heavy rainfall, it will not take much additional rain to result in flash flooding," the NWS said of northeastern NJ.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Just as some buildings in Hoboken finished cleaning up after floods from from Tropical Storm Henri this week, Hudson County and most of New Jersey is under a flash flood watch from 2 p.m. Friday through 2 a.m. Sunday, with more rain expected.

"With recent heavy rainfall, it will not take much additional rain to result in flash flooding," the National Weather Service said in issuing a flood watch for Hudson County, Bergen, Essex, Passaic, and Union counties.

High tide in Hoboken during the watch period will be at 1:24 a.m. and 1:46 p.m. Saturday.

City of Hoboken Sends An Alert

The city of Hoboken sent an alert Friday morning saying, "Please be advised that the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for northeast New Jersey from 2 p.m. today until late Saturday night. According to NWS, a quick 1 to 2 inches of rain combined with recent heavy rainfall may result in flash flooding. Any intense rainfall of greater than 0.8 inch per hour may result in flash flooding in low-lying areas."

The city said, "Flooding is possible at low-lying intersections. Barricades will be deployed in these areas. Please do not drive around barricades." (See the list of intersections below.)

While some may consider flash floods just an inconvenience, these floods have proved fatal to drivers (sometimes trapping parents and children in their cars as water rises) and to children playing near small streams.
