HOBOKEN, NJ — A Hoboken barbershop is marking a key milestone this year: their 10th anniversary in the Mile Square City.

Last weekend, staff members at The Hoboken Man were at the Hoboken Arts and Music Festival to celebrate the local barbershop’s landmark birthday.

The locally owned and operated shop is located on Maxwell Place. (Learn more about this business here)

Many of the stylists and managers at The Hoboken Man have been there from day one.

“I can remember walking into the barbershop for my job interview,” said master stylist Sandy Avila. “There was such excitement about the opportunity to be part of a new business. We still feel that excitement 10 years later.”

That excitement extends to the barbershop’s clients, too.

“I’ve been coming to The Hoboken Man since they opened,” said Ken Eagle, a local resident. “Now I bring my son here.”

Emily Gonce, one of the shop’s owners, lives in Southwest Hoboken and has seen the local business community develop before her eyes.

“When we opened, there were very few barbershops in Hoboken,” Gonce said. “Now there are many, but we still stand out in our community.”

One of the ways the business stands out from the crowd is via its outreach efforts, co-owner Steven Holm said.

“While we most often support the local schools connected to our clients’ children, we’ve also contributed to local organizations that fight homelessness and to organizations near and dear to our employees, such as animal rights organizations,” Holm said.
