Hoboken Cops See Summer Bike Theft Spike, Issue Advisory
The Hoboken Police Department is asking local residents to take proper security precautions in the face of an "ongoing" bike theft issue.
Hoboken, NJ – The Hoboken Police Department is asking local residents to take proper security precautions in the face of an “ongoing” bike theft issue in the city.
According to a police news release, during the summer months the HPD has had an increase in bicycle thefts in different areas of the city, with bikes taken from areas such as racks or secured to gates outside of local homes.
“To help combat these thefts we are asking residences to keep the bicycles inside their homes and not outside the gates or inside their garages unsecured,” police stated. “We understand that some residences use their bicycles as a means of transportation and need to secure them on bike racks. In a situation like this, always use a lock and chain of the highest quality.”

The HPD continued:
“If anyone sees a strange person attempting to take a bicycle, do not confront them, instead call the police. The best thing one can do is be a good witness. If anyone is purchasing a new bicycle always keep the serial number available. At times bicycles are found and we can match serial numbers with an owner. The Hoboken Police Department provides registration forms which are kept on file. Anyone is welcome to come to the police station and fill one out.”
