HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken police officers seized more than a pound of marijuana during a traffic stop on Monday evening, authorities said.

According to the Hoboken Police Department, officers on patrol allegedly saw a 2016 GMC fail to halt at a stop sign near 2nd and Jackson streets at 5:46 p.m. When a dispatcher notified the officers that the vehicle’s registration had expired “several months” in the past, the officers pulled the car over on the 400-block of Jackson Street.

The officers approached the car and asked for the credentials of the driver, Trevor Vaughn, 39, of Weehawken. At that time, one of the officers smelled a “strong odor of burnt and raw marijuana” coming from inside the vehicle, and saw a brown cigar “in plain view” which he believed to contain cannabis, police said.

When the officers told Vaughn to step outside the vehicle, they saw a clear, plastic, sandwich bag filled with marijuana, again in plain view, authorities said.

Police arrested Vaughn and searched the car, finding 500 grams of marijuana and more than $1,600 in cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales, authorities said.
