Hoboken Defeated By Montclair In NJ Monthly's 'Downtown Showdown'

It’s official… Montclair has a better downtown area than Hoboken.

At least according to NJ Monthly magazine.

On Tuesday, the publication declared Montclair the winner in its “Downtown Showdown” matchup against Hoboken.

The publication’s elimination-style matchup originally pitted 16 New Jersey municipalities against each other to determine which has “the best downtown.”

Hoboken and Montclair had both won the original round (Hoboken defeating Jersey City and Montclair edging out Westfield.

Montclair now advances to take on Maplewood in round 3.

“Social networking and word-of-mouth appear to be driving the voting in the winning towns,” NJ Monthy wrote.

Here’s what NJ Monthly has to say about Montclair’s downtown:

“Montclair’s restaurant scene is one of the best in the state, and its shopping and cultural attractions also get high marks… Most of the action is in Montclair Center, which sprawls for about 10 blocks along busy Bloomfield Avenue.”

HOBOKEN

Here’s what NJ Monthly has to say about Hoboken’s downtown:

“The Mile Square City sets the bar for all other Jersey downtowns -particularly the urban kind. Then again, not every town overlooks the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline. Washington Street, the main thoroughfare, is blessed with wide sidewalks to accommodate the foot traffic generated by its cafés, bars, restaurants and shops. It’s a vibrant and stimulating place to stroll.”
