Hoboken Gets $850K For New Park That Will Soak Up Floodwaters
Hoboken's fourth "resiliency park" will have tennis courts and a space for dogs, and will combat flooding.

HOBOKEN, NJ — A new park on the west side of Hoboken will combat flooding and provide a place to play and rest.
Rep. Rob Menendez and Hoboken Mayor Emily Jabbour announced the $850,000 in Community Project Funding on Tuesday.
The 800 Monroe Resiliency Park Project will include tennis courts, walking paths, a splash pad, and an area for dogs, the city said.

Settlement With Developers

The city got the property, initially slated for residential development, through a three-way land swap agreement with the Applied Parties in 2001. The settlement kept development off of 800 Monroe St. (where the park will be) and the city's upper waterfront, and instead, Applied will build closer to the train station.
Initially, a 186-unit residential building was planned for the Monroe Street lot.

As a part of the Monarch Development settlement, the city also got approximately $550,000 in funding from the Applied Parties for the 800 Monroe design process, with no impact to the
municipal budget.
The 1.43-acre park will become the city’s fourth resiliency park, which includes the Northwest Resiliency Park, Southwest Resiliency Park and its expansion, and the Seventh and Jackson Resiliency Park, for a total of over 10 acres of parks with above and below-ground flood mitigating infrastructure.
The city hosted several meetings in 2022 during which residents were invited to give their opinions on various designs.
Menendez secured the $850,000 for the project as part of $19.1 million in federal funding for the 8th Congressional District this fiscal year.
