Hoboken High Baseball #1 in Hudson County

Red Wings complete dramatic comeback to win county championship.

JERSEY CITY—Late comebacks and unlikely wins aren't a new experience for the Hoboken High baseball team this season. But even by those standards, this was one was miraculous.

Trailing by two and held hitless for six innings, the Red Wings scored three in the top of the seventh inning to stun North Bergen and win the 2011 Ed Ford Memorial Baseball Tournament Saturday at Caven Point.

Hoboken's Andres Flores broke up the no-hitter attempt by the Bruins' Marco Hernandez with a one-out double to centerfield. The seventh-seeded Red Wings were the beneficiaries of consecutive fielding miscues. Abe Groomes reached on an infield popup which dropped just a few feet from the plate and Sal Pagan then reached base on what initially appeared to be a potential double play grounder.

Down its final out after a popup to first base, the Red Wings (17-10) would tie the game on consecutive walks by Danny Grossi and Connor Milne.  A wild pitch would then allow pinch runner Hector Rodriguez for the game's winning run.

Groomes overcame a Hoboken error to protect the lead, retiring North Bergen's Chris Vann on a fly out to centerfielder Kenny Roder for the game's final out.

Groomes allowed just one earned run, four hits and a walk in the complete game victory. The junior lefty struck out nine batters.

The Red Wings won't have much time to celebrate their victory. As they open up the state playoffs today. Hoboken, seeded 11th in the North 2, Group 1 section, will play at University of Newark in the first round.
