HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken officials are offering local students a free, fun place to spend their snow day on Monday: an “open gym.”

After Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in New Jersey due to winter storm forecasts – the Hoboken Public School District announced that it was closing schools due to inclement weather on Monday, March 4.

Hoboken city officials followed with an announcement that may help out local parents who work, but need a place to send their children:

“Due to @HobokenSchools being closed on March 4th, Mayor @RaviBhalla is opening the Multi-Service Center’s gym to all students free of charge. The gym will be open from 9 am to 3:30 pm and will be supervised by city staff the entire time. #SnowDay.”

Hoboken officials issued a clarification shortly afterwards:

“To clarify, this will function as an ‘Open Gym’ where parents & families may bring children under their supervision between 9 to 3:30 pm. The city will have staff on site, but this is an opportunity for kids to use a city gym with family and friends while school is closed due to snow.”

HOBOKEN IN THE SNOW: PARKING, SHOVELING

Parking was allowed to resume on “emergency snow routes” in Hoboken on Monday morning, city officials reported.

“Property owners are reminded to clear sidewalks/corners of snow up to six hours of the completion of the snow storm, in this case by 11 a.m.,” officials stated.

Hoboken officials provided the following snow-related information on Sunday.

Street Cleaning

Street cleaning enforcement is suspended for Monday, March 4 and is scheduled to resume on Tuesday, March 5.

Keeping Sidewalks Clear

Property owners/occupants are reminded that they have six hours after the completion of a storm to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, along with adjoining ramps or curb cuts. Residents are urged to assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties. It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants. The City is responsible for clearing sidewalks around City-owned properties.

The City performs proactive inspections and also relies on citizen complaints to help identify those property owners that are not meeting sidewalk safety requirements. The vast majority of property owners comply with these regulations, but the City will issue fines to those who do not keep sidewalks clear.

The City will announce when enforcement will commence after the snow has ended.

Reporting Problems

To report an unplowed street, unshoveled sidewalk, or other problem, residents can submit an online complaint via www.hoboken311.com or via the Hoboken 311 mobile application.
