Hoboken Honors Firefighters’ Deeds: Hudson River Rescue, Fallen Construction Worker

Hoboken, NJ – A “flawless” rescue of a fallen construction worker. A water rescue of an unconscious woman in the Hudson River.

These are two of the feats of bravery that Hoboken firefighters accomplished last year, according to city officials.

During a presentation at City Hall last week, officials paid tribute to local firefighters for their response to two emergency situations that took place in 2015.

FALLEN CONSTRUCTION WORKER

According to Hoboken city officials:

“On December 24, 2015, members acted heroically in performing a confined space rescue. The Hoboken Fire Department responded when a construction worker fell into the hull of a dry dock and suffered a spinal injury. Firefighters assessed the situation, then provided ventilation and emergency medical treatment. Rescue personnel set up a rigging system and hauled the worker out of the confined space. The HFD then transferred patient care to the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps.”

Participating responders included: Battalion Chief William Rozmester, Captain Maria Diaz, Captain Andrew Markey, Captain Anibal Vasquez, Firefighter Nestor Aponte, Firefighter Ricardo Bracero, Firefighter Tyrell Dortch, Firefighter Nicola Ratto, Firefighter Anthony Richards, Firefighter Rafael Roman, Firefighter Antonio Sanchez, Firefighter Charles Santiago, Firefighter Eugene Turonis

HUDSON RIVER RESCUE

City officials wrote:

“On June 8, 2015, members acted heroically in performing a water rescue. The Hoboken Fire Department responded when a semi-conscious victim was found in the Hudson River. The victim was hitting her head against the bulkhead wall and taking in mouthfuls of water. Firefighters lowered a ground ladder into the river and forcibly pulled the victim to safety. The victim was saved from possible drowning, hypothermia or other injury.”

City officials recognized the following firefighters and fire officers for their “professionalism, teamwork, and calm under pressure while conducting a flawless rescue.”
