HOBOKEN, NJ — A local PTO member, community activist and parent has thrown her hat into the ring for the Hoboken Board of Education race in November.

Riding the slogan of “An Independent For All Our Kids,” Ailene McGuirk announced her candidacy for the board last month, pledging to “increase opportunities for all children in the district from all socio-economic corners of the Mile Square City.”

According to a campaign news release, McGuirk is a Connors Elementary School parent and co-chair of the school’s PTO. She started the SW Hoboken Parents Alliance, a group that “serves to update parents in the downtown neighborhood about schools, local candidates/elections and cultural events.”

McGuirk is active in the SW Park advocacy groups, the co-leader of her daughter’s Daisy troop, and served on Mayor Bhalla’s transition committee for education.

McGuirk advocated for “equal” kindergarten expansion throughout the district in a 2017 op-ed with Patch, which can be seen here.
