Hoboken Kid Wins National Merit Scholarship: See Career Goal, College

A slew of new New Jersey students have won National Merit Scholarships for college, including one scholar from Hoboken.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Several more National Merit Scholarship winners from New Jersey were announced this week, including one from Hoboken.

The competitive annual scholarships are used for all four years of college, and are awarded based on PSAT scores, recommendations, and more.

Last month, a slew of winners were announced who will get scholarships directly from the foundation, or via a corporation. This week's announcement was solely for scholarships given by the students' intended colleges, through the foundation.

National Merit Scholarships guarantee students $1,000 to $10,000 per year during college.

Probable career field: Computer Science

High school: High Tech High, Secaucus (a Hudson County public high school with a competitive admissions process)

College for fall: Rutgers University.

Rutgers, which traces its beginnings to 1766, is the state university of New Jersey, enrolling undergraduates at 13 colleges (suburban and urban settings of 110 to 8,200 students) in New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden. Most of the colleges are residential. They offer study in a large variety of arts and science fields and many professional areas, such as Engineering, Pharmacy, Nursing,Environmental Sciences, Agriculture, and Performing Arts. Graduate degrees are offered in numerous fields.
