Hoboken Loses To Dickinson In Nailbiter

Dickinson's Brent Burgess hit a long shot at the buzzer to defeat Hoboken 73-72 Tuesday night

It looked like Hoboken had this particular away game in the bag with a 2 point lead and 2.4 seconds left in regulation play.

Not so fast.

Dickinson High sophomore Brent Burgess hit a near half-court, double-pump, 3 point shot at the buzzer to give his team the win 73-72.

The gym went absolutely crazy.

The game began in a frenzy.  In the first minute of play, Hoboken quickly took the lead by seven points with a trio of plays: a pair of free throws by Senior Eddie Canary,  a deep left side 3 pointer from Junior Luis Santiago and an authoratative dunk by Canary that set the gymnasium ablaze with excitement.  Dickinson managed to get a number of  points on the board in the first quarter but Hoboken still led 28-16 at the quarter's close.

In the first half of the second quarter, Hoboken remained in charge.  They seemed to score effortlessly and quickly on every possession.  But with just under 4 minutes left in the half, the tables slowly began to turn.  Dickinson sophomore Brent Burgess  hit 2 key free throws, and his teammate Dashawn White converted on a power move to the basket to cut the Hoboken lead to 6 points, 36-30.  Burgess then hit a flurry of shots and made several key defensive plays.  Hoboken led by 3 points at the half, 42-39.

The third quarter belonged to Dickinson who pulled ahead and led by 5 points going in to the fourth quarter, in large part, due to the stellar play of Burgess and White.

The game's final quarter saw many lead changes and it seemed to be anybody's game.  Hoboken's Eddie Canary slammed another dunk off an alley-oop pass from Julio Fermaint to give Hoboken the lead 70-68, but Dickinson quickly recovered to tie the game at 70-70.

Hoboken called a timeout and came out with a hugely successful play.   Luis Santiago faked a pass to a teammate and then took it to the hoop himself and scored, putting Hoboken up by 2, 72-70.  With 2.4 seconds left in the game, it looked good for Hoboken.  But Brent Burgess' hail mary shot at the buzzer gave his team a resounding win.

Burgess was the game's high scorer with 27 points.  Dashawn White contributed 16 points.

High scorers for Hoboken were Eddie Canary with 16 points and Robert Cabrera and Abraham Groomes with 10 a piece.
