HOBOKEN, NJ — After years of renovations, Hoboken's temporary Northwest Park will reopen Monday as the new 5-acre ResilienCity Park, the largest resiliency park in New Jersey.

The park will include a multipurpose athletic field, basketball court that doubles as a stormwater detention basin, playground, open lawn space, water spray area, and other open space amenities.

Mayor Ravi Bhalla will join Gov. Phil Murphy, U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, and students Zoe Magaletta and Harrison Green among others to cut the ribbon at 12th and Madison streets.

The park will help mitigate the effects of heavy flooding events exacerbated by climate change, serving as one of the largest resiliency parks in the country, the city said. It can hold up to 2 million gallons of rainwater.

The park's name was recently changed from Northwest Park (a change that took some members of the City Council by surprise, with Councilwoman Jen Giattino saying a name change should be up for a council vote).

ResilienCity Park was funded in part by a $10 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Building Resilient Infrastructure in Communities (BRIC) program, low-interest financing through the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Clean Water State Revolving Loan Fund, as well as $1 million in grants from the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund.

The ribbon-cutting begins at 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
