Hoboken Police Officer Injured During Arrest

One officer was injured early Sunday morning when the Hoboken police responded to a street fight.

HOBOKEN, NJ — A Hoboken police officer was injured early Sunday morning when responding to a report of a street fight, police said.

Darian Veliu, 24, of Elmwood Park was arrested around 1 a.m. for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

According to police, they responded to a report of a fight in progress at First and Washington streets, the area four blocks from the train station, with many bars and businesses.

"Upon arriving, there was no active fights," police said, "however, while dealing with the crowd, Mr. Veliu continued to act disorderly."

Police say Veliu resisted arrest at first. During the arrest, Officer Jessie Castellano suffered an ankle injury.

"After gaining control of him, he was processed and his charges were placed on a summons," police said.

Castellano was not seriously injured, and was able to finish the shift, said Lt. Jonathan Mecka.
