A broken standpipe forced the evacuation of a senior building in Hoboken on a frigid New Year's Eve.

HOBOKEN, NJ — A broken standpipe forced the evacuation of a senior building in Hoboken on a frigid New Year’s Eve, but a quick response from local emergency workers helped to mitigate the damage and protect the residents, authorities say.
According to Hoboken Police Chief Ken Ferrante, a standpipe busted in the building at 400 First Street, prompting an evacuation of the premises. Responding agencies included the Hoboken Police Department, the Hoboken Fire Department, the Hoboken OEM and the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
The residents were moved to the Multi Service Center during the incident, Ferrante said.

According to the HFD, “a large water leak disabled the fire sprinkler/standpipe system.” The system was restored and partially repaired, with full repairs expected by Tuesday.
Mayor Ravi Bhalla posted a photo of the damaged building and thanked local first responders for their efforts.
