Hoboken Shows Gains Against Ridgefield in Junior Varsity Scrimmage

Coach is optimistic about season ahead.

The Redwings junior varsity basketball team showed its potential on Saturday during a scrimmage, impressing head coach Shaun Kolmer that the team is a step closer to being ready for an anticipated tough opening game next week against Jersey City's Saint Peter's Prep.

"Today was our second scrimmage, yesterday we were a little confused with our plays and with our defense as well," said Kolmer.  "I had a long talk with them on the bus back, and we looked a lot better today than we did yesterday."

The coach added that there's still a long way to go to meet the level of play he wants. "We're getting close but we're just not there yet," he said.

Kolmer said he does see a bright season ahead for several of his key players such as John Smith  who scored 10 points  in the scrimmage  against Ridgefield plus 8 rebounds, as well as for Danny Baron, who scored 11 points with three 3-pointers.

"Danny Baron is our best shooter" the coach said, adding "John Smith had the best all around game with rebounds and blocks."

Overall, the coach is hopeful about his team. "We have a lot of tall kids that are just very raw and haven't played much so they have to be coached." Kolmer said. "But it's early so I'm optimistic."
