Hoboken Teachers Nominated For ‘LifeChanger’ Awards
The Hoboken Charter School teachers are "making a difference in the lives of students."

HOBOKEN, NJ — A pair of Hoboken teachers were recently nominated for the 2016-17 national LifeChanger of the Year Award.
According to a news release from the National Life Group Foundation (NLGF), middle school math teacher Chris Kunkel and music teacher Sean Gavarny, both of Hoboken Charter School received nominations for the award, which recognizes and rewards the K-12 public and private school educators and employees across the United States who are “making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership.”
The NLGF stated that Kunkel was nominated by the parent of a student who wishes to remain anonymous.

“He was praised for being a gifted educator who enhances the lives of his students and goes above and beyond his main responsibilities,” the NLGF wrote.
“Mr. Kunkel is a hard worker who not only covers his core topic of math, but covers all areas of STEM,” his nominator reportedly stated. “On his own personal time and weekends, he often spends time with his students, working with them on projects or organizing trips to local educational events. He has a passion for learning and exploration that shows in his interests and in the activities he introduces. This growth mindset ends up creating educational opportunities and experiences for students that would not otherwise be available.”

Gavarny, also known by his students as “Mr. G,” was nominated by Valerie Sessa, the parent of a student. He teaches general music to students in kindergarten through fourth grade, as well as instrumental music to students in fourth through eighth grade.
Additionally, Gavarny directs the school musicals and leads a number of after school musical opportunities, including jazz band, the NLGF stated.
“Mr. Gavarny sets high standards for students that are reflected through high-quality, enjoyable concerts twice a year,” Sessa said. “Students not only learn about music, but about having grit and dedication. As an example, my child began playing the saxophone in fourth grade. With Mr. Gavarny's support, guidance and demand for practice hours, they learned that practicing a little each day led to a drastic improvement in their performance.”
Each school year, the LifeChanger of the Year program receives hundreds of nominations from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. For 2016-2017, there will be a total of 15 individual LifeChanger of the Year awards.
In addition, a 16th prize, the “National Spirit Award,” is given to the school and nominee whose community demonstrates the most support for their nomination.
Each winner will receive a cash award that is split between the individual winner and their school. The national Grand Prize award is $10,000. Winners are announced via surprise award ceremonies held at their schools. The top five winners will also be honored at a national awards ceremony in Naples, Florida.
Winners will be announced in Spring 2017, the group stated.
