Hoboken Terminal: NJ Transit Reopens Concourse After Train Crash

The "Green Wall" at Hoboken Terminal is down, New Jersey Transit officials say.

HOBOKEN, NJ — North Jersey commuters passing through Hoboken Terminal on Monday will get a pleasant surprise. The “Green Wall” is no more.

After a fatal train crash claimed the life of 34-year-old Hoboken mother Fabiola Bittar De Kroon and injured more than 100 other passengers in September 2016, a “temporary green wall” has restricted access to the concourse.

But on Sunday, NJ Transit announced that the wall would be gone for the Monday commute, weeks before its June schedule.

NJ Transit officials provided the following statement:

“The open concourse space at Hoboken Terminal will provide customers additional pedestrian walkways which were previously closed. This allows for increased customer flow through the concourse without the need for customers on tracks 7 and higher to travel through the waiting room to access PATH. It also reconnects customer access between tracks 1-4 and tracks 7 and higher. As part of the short-term repairs, one of the two remaining closed tracks (track 6) will also reopen for service.”

Customers will still see green barricades boxing off the stanchions for the temporary roof structure, officials added.

Federal inspectors found multiple safety violations at Hoboken Terminal only months before the fatal train crash, and it was reported that the ill-fated train was moving at twice the station’s speed limit at the time of the incident.

During the crash, 34-year-old Hoboken mother Fabiola Bittar De Kroon was killed after being hit by debris on the Hoboken platform while the crash's impact caused the terminal's roof to collapse, sending flying metal airborne, officials said.
